The Keep Fit Association recently hosted a series of uplifting dance sessions across the South East, bringing communities together to celebrate movement, joy, and the memory of an extraordinary choreographer. From Kent to London and beyond, participants embraced the beauty of Laban Dance, a discipline rooted in Rudolf Laban’s renowned analysis of movement.
Honouring Denise Palmer: A Dance Tribute in Kent
On Sunday, 2 March, dancers gathered at East Malling Village Hall for a heartfelt event, Let’s Dance for Denise, led by Tutor Gilly Martin. Open to all and free of charge, the session served as a tribute to Denise Palmer, a stalwart of Keep Fit Laban Dance, who left a lasting impact on the dance community.
Denise’s legacy was honoured through holistic lyrical dance, a style accessible to all, allowing participants to experience the joy she championed throughout her career. The event was advertised across the South East Keep Fit Counties, welcoming both newcomers and seasoned dancers alike to celebrate movement together.
Laban Dance in London: A Celebration of Holistic Movement
The London Keep Fit Association hosted another fantastic session on 1 March at Bromley Methodist Church. Led by National Laban Dance Trainer Gilda Chambers, the event provided attendees with an immersive experience in Laban Dance Fitness, a discipline that explores movement and space through expressive choreography.
The taster session welcomed all, inviting participants to engage with Laban’s dynamic approach to movement, fostering creativity and physical well-being. The event continued the Let’s Dance celebration, bringing the magic of Keep Fit Laban Dance to the heart of London.
Extending the Celebration: Let’s Dance in Coulsdon
The Let’s Dance festivities didn’t stop there. On 6 March, the South East Keep Fit Association hosted yet another inspiring session at Coulsdon Community Centre. Led by Laban Dance teacher Maureen Chitty, this session celebrated holistic full-body movement and lyrical dance.
Designed to be accessible to everyone, particularly older adults looking to enjoy the beauty of movement, Maureen’s class showcased creative choreography inspired by Rudolf Laban’s techniques. With a warm and inclusive atmosphere, attendees had the chance to connect through dance and embrace its transformative power.
A Gathering of Passionate Dancers
Across all three events, the energy was electric, and the enthusiasm among participants was undeniable. From Kent to London to Coulsdon, dancers came together to celebrate movement, fitness, and community spirit.
Attendees shared their appreciation for the events:
“It was a beautiful tribute and a wonderful reminder of the joy that Laban Dance brings to us all.”
“Denise’s spirit was alive in every step—what an incredible way to celebrate her legacy!”
