On 4 October, the town of Uckfield was transformed into a vibrant hub of energy and inspiration as the Keep Fit Association (KFA) hosted its much-anticipated National AGM and Get Together. Members from across the UK gathered for a day dedicated to dance, connection, and the joy of movement, all brilliantly hosted by the South East region.
Inspiring Sessions to Start the Day
The event kicked off with three spectacular open sessions, each led by one of South East’s outstanding movement mentors:
- Trudie Nichols (Kent KFA)
- Maureen Chitty (Surrey KFA)
- Rosemary Quinnell (East Sussex KFA)

These sessions welcomed both seasoned dancers and newcomers, offering a unique blend of Laban-inspired movement. The atmosphere was electric, filled with lyrical, energising, and expressive dance that set the tone for an unforgettable day.
Showcasing Laban Dance at Its Finest
The performances throughout the day were nothing short of exceptional:
- The East Sussex County Team, choreographed by Rosemary Quinnell, captivated the audience with a stunning piece set to Barbra Streisand’s “With One Look” from Sunset Boulevard, transporting everyone to the glamour of 1940s Hollywood.
- The London County Team, produced by Sheila Bryan, presented “Lyrical Legends” set to Dvořák’s “Legends,” celebrating friendship and cherished memories.
- Brenda Chadwick and the Surrey team delivered a vibrant performance titled “A Kind of Magic,” while Jan Phanides led the Middlesex team through a dynamic routine set to music by Meghan Trainor and John Legend.
- The South East region surprised attendees with a special performance: Jan Norman’s regional class members danced gracefully to “Die With a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, leaving a lasting impression.
Kent’s Diamond Pride
A standout moment was the Kent County Team’s “Diamond Pride,” choreographed by Trudie Nichols and inspired by a lesser-known Neil Diamond song. The piece celebrated diversity, with team members ranging in age from 22 to 82, and even featured mothers and daughters dancing together. Trudie shared, “Dance brings us together and helps us through. It’s pure joy.”
Heartfelt Guest Performances
Two guest performances added emotional depth to the day:
- Lisa Terry’s team paid tribute to her mother, Sheila Howarth, with a beautiful material-based choreography honouring Sheila’s legacy.
- Karen Parker Geddes’ team explored themes of identity, visibility, and the joy of relationships, reminding us that dance is a powerful tool for self-expression at every age.
AGM Highlights & Looking Ahead
The National Board delivered informative updates, reaffirming their dedication to the Association’s core values and vision. The day served as a powerful reminder of what makes the Keep Fit Association truly special: movement, friendship, and a shared sense of purpose. During the meeting, a special video was shown, highlighting a year in the life of the Keep Fit Association and showcasing the wonderful work and events taking place across the country.
